Additional information
Hacienda Sonora is located at the foot of Costa Rica’s Poas Volcano and runs entirely on renewable energy from its own hydroelectric plant. This
powers the farm and mills, while also providing free electricity to workers’ homes. Committed to fair wages and community support, the farm shares
its success with those who help make it possible.
The 100 hectares estate includes 45 hectares of shaded coffee fields surrounded by native trees, promoting biodiversity and healthy soil. The rest
of the land includes 35 hectares of forest reserve and 20 hectares of sugarcane, cultivated for over 150 years.
With its own micromill, Hacienda Sonora processes and separates lots by variety, creating unique micro lots. This cascara comes from Natural
processed coffees. After selective picking, cherries are washed and dried on raised beds or patios, then stored and hulled on-site. The dried husks
are collected as cascara.
The farm is also part of NAMA Café de Costa Rica, a government-led initiative to reduce emissions in coffee production. Hacienda Sonora
contributes data and benefits from incentives that support low-carbon, sustainable practices.
